The Dancing Scientist (aka: Jeffrey Vinokur) came to OLQA on Tuesday, November 4th. His 50-min stage show called “So You Think You Can Do Science” has been performed at the Smithsonian Institute, World Science Festival, USA Science & Engineering Festival, and over 250 presentations at K-12 schools coast-to-coast. The show combines ‘wow’ science demonstrations, with hip hop music, a student competition, and a few jaw-dropping dance moves. Jeffrey Vinokur, 23, has an M.S. in Biochemistry from UCLA, and specializes in demonstrating and explaining science through inspirational school shows and television. With 20+ million YouTube views, he has a contagious passion for science and a talent for teaching. Vinokur is currently conducting his PhD research at UCLA, and frequently travels to schools nationwide. The students enjoyed some science fun while learning and here are some scenes:
National Red Ribbon Week 2014
Monday:
“I Pledge To Be Drug Free”
- All students pledged to be drug free at morning assembly and signed their name during the day on the Drug Free Banner. Teachers take this opportunity to talk to the students about what it means to pledge to be drug free on this day and “Drug Free Wrist Bands” are passed out.
Tuesday:
“Red Ribbon on the Fence for Each Class”
- Each student received a red ribbon to tie to the white fence at the exit of our parking lot. The Red Ribbon banner and red ribbons hung on the fence all week.
Wednesday:
“Team Up Against Drugs”
- Students and teachers wore their favorite team jersey to school that day – talk about team spirit!
Thursday:
“Sock It to Drugs”
- Students wore crazy socks to school. This was a fun way to remind students that it is fun to be a part of saying no to drugs.
Friday:
“Bump, Set, Spike It to Drugs!!!”
- OLQA Volleyball players competed in a friendly volleyball match against faculty. All students watched and cheered for both teams!!!

2014 Book Fair
OLQA’s Annual Scholastic All-Star Book Fair was fun for students, as well as profitable for our school! Our 2014 Book Fair broke the record in sales again for the third year in a row to underwrite the purchase of books for our classrooms and library. Let’s take this opportunity to thank the Book Fair Co-Chairs Christie McKenna & Aiza Fargas and all the wonderful volunteers that made it happen.

2014 Annual Golf Tournament was On Par!
This year’s annual Golf Tournament was a great success! A a bright, sunny day on May 8th was filled with great OLQA community spirit as golfers and volunteers enjoyed the beautiful venue at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Course. Many thanks are extended to Jeremy Laster, our chairperson and Lori Swastek, volunteer coordinator and their committee for the wonderful job in planning this fun event. Many volunteers and golfers are already making plans for next year!
Children’s Choir Musical
The OLQA Children’s Choir put on two fabulous performances of The Rockslinger and His Greatest Hit by Allen Pote and Tom Long. The story of David and Goliath, Brother Robin played Goliath with Aiden Delfin on his shoulders! Students enjoyed the performance during school and families and friends attended in the evening on Fat Tuesday at the church. The Choir is made up of 3rd-8th graders who attend OLQA school and/or the parish and is directed by Diana Landis. Thank you to all involved in making this a performance to remember!

Green and Jeans Day!
Our annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration was a day of contests and green treats! It was an exciting day with fun balloons, decorations, lively music, and our very own leprechaun, Coach K welcoming students as they drove up to school in the morning. Thank you to our room moms and volunteers who served frozen green yogurt. A big thank you to Mrs. Rodi and Mrs. James, Room Parent Coordinators for making this day possible and fun for our students!
Scenes from that day — look at all those green teeth!
8th Grade Senior Luncheon
On March 17th, our Eighth Grade class hosted a luncheon for our senior friends at OLQA. During the past year these Eighth Grade students wrote letters to these senior friends, and crafted beautiful finger rosaries as luncheon favors. The students also baked apple pies and Irish soda bread, and made potato soup for their guests. The most impressive part of all was how gracefully our students interacted with their guests. The Catholic Identity of Our Lady Queen of Angels School was clearly evident for all to see, feel, and enjoy!
Thank you to our Eighth Grade Room Mothers, Mrs.Hopkins, Mrs. Snyder, Mrs. Schoenbaum, Mrs. Frank and Mrs. Vanis for all the organizing that went into this event and to the Eighth Grade mothers who helped serve the delicious lunch. Your children reflect your kindness and support.
