8th Grade Service Project – Senior Luncheon

Written By: Feng V - May• 27•15

On March 16th, our Eighth Grade class hosted a luncheon for our Senior friends at OLQA. During the past year these Eighth Grade students and Senior friends became pen pals exchanging letters and learning about each other . For the luncheon, the students baked apple pies and Irish soda bread, and made potato soup for their guests. The most impressive part of all was how gracefully our students interacted with their guests. The Catholic Identity of Our Lady Queen of Angels School was clearly evident for all to see, feel, and enjoy!

Thank you to our Eighth Grade Room Mothers, Mrs. Van Dalsem, Mrs. Morales, Mrs. Neilsen and Mrs. Byer for all the organizing that went into this event and to the Eighth Grade mothers who helped serve the delicious lunch. Your children reflect your kindness and support.

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of OLQA School.

Daughters of the American Revolution Contest

Congratulations to our OLQA students!

We celebrate our student winners in their citizenship, essay and American History categories for the annual Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) contest.   All schools in the Newport Mesa area, private and public, are invited to enter this contest and OLQA was very well represented with nine medals.

There were twelve overall winners in the essay contest.   Out of these twelve winners, five were from Our Lady Queen of Angels School!  Our committed teachers have developed our students into fine writers capable of competing at the highest level with their peers from other schools. The writing programs in the grades that qualified this contest are taught by two very dedicated teachers. We congratulate Mrs. Sharkey and Mr. Bergeron for their students’ success.

Three years ago, our faculty chose to follow the Lucy Calkins Writing Program.  This writing program is a worldwide writing program that began at Columbia University in New York City.  Their curriculum is based on educational research and continual training for the teachers.  Over the past two summers, our teachers have had workshops on the Lucy Calkins Writing Program.

Now in our third year in this writing program, we see our students as creative and skilled writers.  Every teacher from Kindergarten through Eighth Grade should be praised for all of their efforts to make our students the successful, confident writers that they are today.  A graduate of Our Lady Queen of Angels School will enter high school with the ability to clearly communicate their thoughts through writing.

Congratulations to our winners!

Written By: Feng V - May• 04•15

Our annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration was a day of contests and green treats! It was an exciting day with fun balloons, decorations, lively music, musical chairs and a cake raffle! Thank you to our room moms and volunteers who served frozen green yogurt. A big thank you to Mrs. James for making this day possible, the auction committee for introducing musical chairs and our Student Council for the cake raffle which raised over $900 for Catholic Relief Services.

Scenes from that day — look at all those green teeth!

Congratulations to all the members of this year’s Academic Decathlon Team, and to the faculty and parents who supported the Team throughout the year!

Our Lady Queen of Angels Decathlon Team participated in the Diocese of Orange Decathlon at Santa Margarita Catholic High School.  Months of preparation would lead to this day.  Ten outstanding OLQA students would represent our school in logic, super quiz and eight individual categories.  We are thrilled that our decathletes placed third in logic. This is a team competition and everyone received a medal for this event.  A big round of applause goes to Nick Van Dalsem for placing second in Literature. Nick received his second medal for this event. Our school came in fifth for super quiz.
