RECORDER CONCERT

Heartfelt thanks and congratulations are in order for all the 5th and 6th graders who were able to participate in the Recorder Concert on Sunday, May 20th.   We were very happy to host the Laguna Recorder Ensemble and their director Kathy Lucey.  They inspired us with their skill and beautiful playing.  Fifth graders Emma Johnson, Taylor Morales, Lauren Ocampo, Emily Palhetas, TJ Jenkins, Jonathan Lefebvre, Shawn Nielsen, and Diego Carreras performed a medley of 6 songs and sixth graders Evan Simpson, Dane Newton, Katrina Hinker, Lauren Hillebrand, Jamie Wiggins, Adriana Montano, Cate Moses, Grace Snider and Ava Wagner performed 4 pieces with the Laguna Ensemble.  All students sang the Austrian Hiking Song as well as 3 other numbers.  The concert closed with “You’re a Grand Old Flag” played by the Laguna kids and sung by all.  Specially designed recorder cookies were a treat for the performers.

OLQA CHILDREN’S CHOIR TO BE CONGRATULATED!

Thank you to the OLQA Children’s Choir for their rousing and meaningful performance of Oh, Jonah! which they performed for our school on Friday, March 30th in the church.  Accompanied by Dr. Patricia Lamb on the piano, Mr. Michael Upward on the organ, and Tim Brennan on drums, the choir sang and acted out the story of Jonah who was played by 8th grader Cami Dang.  Claire Otterbein, Captain, and her able assistant, Smee, played by Joey Pang led the sailing crew.  Kalusha Brutlag sang the Song of Forgiveness as the King of the Ninevite as they humbled themselves before God.  The angels were Olivia Egly, Gabby Spivey, Noelle Howe, Caroline Farley from Ensign Intermediate School, Donica Garcia, and Emma Johnson.  All of the almost 60 choir members gave outstanding performances in their roles.

MATER DEI JR. HIGH HONOR CHOIR

Congratulations to the following OLQA 7th and 8th graders for their participation in the Mater Dei Jr. High Honor Choir on Monday evening, March 26th at Segerstrom Hall!  Danny Casey, Cami Dang, Olivia Egly, Donica Garcia, Rylee Gladych, Jack Hardwick, Claire Otterbein, & Gabby Spivey were selected to be a part of this Honor Choir which was made up of singers from 15 Catholic School choirs in our Diocese.

Under the direction of Mr. Scott Melvin, these singers rehearsed for 3 Monday evenings to prepare their 3 musical selections, which brought the house down at the Orange County Performing Arts Center.  We are very proud of you and all our former OLQA students who were singing on stage for this concert!

5TH  GRADE LEARN ABOUT THE PIPE ORGAN

Dr. Lamb treated the 5th Graders to a lecture/ demonstration on the church organ during their regularly scheduled music class.  For the previous two weeks, they put their recorders aside and learned about the Pipe Organ in lessons taught by Mrs. Landis.  For a culmination of this unit, Dr. Lamb literally rolled out the church’s digital organ and showed the students how an organ works as well as performed some famous organ pieces such as JS Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in d minor.  Brandon True from 5A and Miranda Gilbert from 5B had the privilege of performing their own piano pieces on the organ and all experienced the glorious sounds that the organ can make.  The 5th Graders are excited for the day that OLQA will have its very own Pipe Organ in Phase 2 of the church building project.
